The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos as part of efforts to improve critical transport infrastructure in the country.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the State House in Abuja after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Umahi said the council also approved N5.6 billion for the engagement of advanced engineering consultants who will handle the design and costing of the new bridge.
According to him, the decision followed extensive stakeholder consultations which concluded that the aging Carter Bridge can no longer be effectively rehabilitated.
He explained that the recommendation presented to the council was for the bridge to be completely demolished and replaced with a new structure.
The minister noted that the project forms part of the administration’s broader plan to strengthen key road and bridge infrastructure nationwide.
Umahi further revealed that the council approved six major infrastructure projects at the meeting, including highway reconstruction and upgrades across different geopolitical zones.
He added that the Federal Government plans to present at least four completed projects in each zone for presidential commissioning by May 15.
The Carter Bridge, which connects Lagos Island to the mainland, is one of the city’s major traffic routes and carries heavy vehicular movement daily.
