Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed all political appointees and public servants who plan to contest in the 2027 elections to step down from their positions within seven days.
The directive was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Faruq Ibrahim. According to the statement, affected officials must resign or retire from service on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
Those covered by the order include commissioners, special advisers, directors-general, executive secretaries, managing directors, senior special assistants, special assistants, special reporters, and personal aides.
The government explained that the decision aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant regulations guiding public officers. It specifically referenced Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which governs the involvement of public officials in partisan politics.
The directive is also intended to promote neutrality, accountability, and integrity within the public service.
“All public office holders who intend to participate in the forthcoming general elections are required to resign their appointments within the stipulated timeframe,” the statement emphasized.
Copies of the directive have been forwarded to key government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the Head of Civil Service, the Clerk of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Chief Registrars of both the High Court and the Sharia Court of Appeal in Kano State.
