Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commissioned a 5MVA power substation at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, fulfilling his administration’s promise to restore stable electricity to the institution.

The project, designed to distribute power across the campus through multiple sub-transformers, will ensure steady electricity supply whenever there is power from the national grid. It also includes fault isolation features and will initially run on gas turbines, with plans to transition to renewable energy.

Speaking during the combined 30th to 34th convocation ceremony of the university, Governor Otti described the project as a “promise fulfilled,” revealing that a contract has already been signed for a more comprehensive independent power solution for ABSU and its surrounding communities.

He noted that the facility would not only serve the university but also extend electricity to Uturu and neighbouring areas, boosting socio-economic activities.

The governor also commissioned three fully rehabilitated hostels—A, B, and C—as part of efforts to improve students’ welfare. In addition, he flagged off the construction of a 5,000-capacity female hostel and new faculty buildings for Law and Agriculture.

Otti commended the university management for complying with the state government’s directive to upgrade facilities, expressing satisfaction with the progress of ongoing projects. He reiterated plans to consolidate all ABSU campuses in Uturu, except the teaching hospital in Aba.

Emphasising his administration’s focus on people-oriented governance, the governor stated that the essence of government is to solve problems and improve living conditions.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, praised the governor’s interventions, noting that they would significantly address accommodation challenges and enhance the university’s capacity for academic excellence.
