Deontay Wilder will not be part of Anthony Joshua’s immediate fighting plans, even though the British heavyweight has been offered a possible comeback bout in July.
Joshua is expected to return to the ring under a proposed Riyadh Season two-fight arrangement, which could see him face Tyson Fury in a major showdown later in the year. However, discussions around his next opponent have ruled out a long-rumoured clash with Wilder.
Promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that the American boxer is no longer being considered for Joshua’s upcoming fight, stressing that current negotiations are focused on a different direction.
Wilder had previously been mentioned as a potential tune-up opponent as Joshua prepares for bigger challenges, but stakeholders behind the deal are said to prefer a less risky matchup ahead of the anticipated Fury bout.
The development effectively ends immediate hopes of a long-awaited Joshua vs Wilder encounter, despite years of speculation and repeated public interest in the heavyweight showdown.
