Manchester United have boosted their chances of securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League following a hard-fought 2–1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Red Devils delivered a strong first-half performance, with Casemiro opening the scoring after capitalizing on sustained pressure. Benjamin Šeško doubled the lead before the break, calmly finishing a well-crafted assist from Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes’ assist puts him just one shy of the Premier League’s all-time record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, with four matches still to play this season.
Brentford, however, made things tense late in the game when Mathias Jensen struck a brilliant long-range effort in the 86th minute to pull one back. United were then forced to dig deep in the closing stages, using smart game management to see out the win, although Joshua Zirkzee picked up a booking for time-wasting.
The victory came at a cost for United, with Luke Shaw forced off early due to injury, while Matheus Cunha was ruled out before kickoff with a hip issue.
For Brentford, hopes of a European finish continue to fade as their winless streak drags on, leaving them stuck in mid-table. Meanwhile, United’s latest result strengthens their grip on a top-four spot, putting them firmly on course for a return to elite European competition next season.
Elsewhere, reports suggest Chelsea have begun drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements for manager Liam Rosenior, with Andoni Iraola among the leading candidates.
