Pretoria High Court Revisits Burial Dispute of Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu

The Pretoria High Court is set to reconvene on Monday to address the ongoing dispute surrounding the burial of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu. This follows a brief adjournment on Friday, when the court heard that the Lungu family and representatives from the Zambian government were engaging in discussions to resolve the contentious matter.

At the heart of the issue is a legal ruling that grants the Zambian government the right to repatriate Lungu’s remains for a state funeral in his home country. The Lungu family is seeking leave to appeal this full judgment, which grants the government authority over the former president’s final resting place.

As the court convenes on Monday morning, it will review any potential agreements reached between the Lungu family and the Zambian government. Should no consensus be achieved, the court plans to move forward with the Lungu family’s application for an appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). The outcome of these proceedings could have significant implications for the former president’s burial arrangements.
