Abia Government Issues Stern Warning Against Falsehoods, Vows Legal Action on Malicious Propaganda

The Abia State Government has issued a strong warning to individuals and groups spreading deliberate falsehoods aimed at misleading the public and discrediting the current administration.

Speaking at a press briefing following the weekly State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, declared a zero-tolerance stance on malicious propaganda.

Kanu accused certain individuals of intentionally circulating misinformation designed to incite disaffection and erode public trust in the government. While reaffirming the administration’s openness to constructive criticism, he emphasized that it would no longer overlook efforts to spread deceitful narratives.

“The government will not sit back while falsehoods are being peddled against it with the aim of causing division,” Kanu stated, warning that those responsible will face legal consequences.

He was quick to note that the Otti-led government distinguishes itself from previous regimes by respecting human rights and avoiding arbitrary arrests. However, he added that the administration would not hesitate to pursue lawful means, including litigation, against consistent offenders.

Kanu urged citizens and critics to seek clarifications through official government channels rather than resorting to misinformation, blackmail, or half-truths.

Highlighting the administration’s commitment to transparency, the Commissioner pointed out that the government has voluntarily published quarterly financial reports, in adherence to principles of accountability—despite not being compelled by law to do so.

“This openness is a privilege, not a loophole for propaganda. While freedom of expression is guaranteed, it must not be abused,” Kanu warned.

He concluded by reiterating the government’s resolve to remain focused on governance and development, cautioning that it would take firm action against any further attempts to derail its mission through malicious content.
