Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lauded Nigeria’s security forces for their recent breakthrough in the ongoing battle against terrorism, following the arrest of two top commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group.
The arrests were confirmed on Saturday by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, who revealed that the operation, carried out between May and July 2025, was a high-risk, intelligence-driven counter-terrorism mission.
The captured terrorists include Mahmud Muhammad Usman, described as the self-proclaimed Emir of Ansaru and the mastermind behind several coordinated terrorist sleeper cells across the country. Usman is also believed to have orchestrated multiple high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies that funded the group’s operations.
Also arrested was his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, leader of the group’s “Mahmudawa” cell, which operates in the vicinity of Kainji National Park, spanning Niger and Kwara States and stretching into the Benin Republic.
Ribadu linked the pair to several notorious incidents, including the 2022 Kuje prison break, the attack on the Niger uranium site, the 2013 abduction of French engineer Francis Collomp, and the 2019 kidnapping of Alhaji Musa Umar Uba (Magajin Garin Daura). They were also implicated in the abduction of the Emir of Wawa and are said to maintain active ties with terror networks in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
Reacting via his official X handle on Tuesday, Peter Obi hailed the arrests as a significant step in the fight against terrorism. He praised the security personnel for their bravery and commitment, especially under challenging conditions.
“Our gallant officers and men in uniform have shown courage, often under very difficult conditions. Their sacrifices remind us that Nigeria can—and must—be safe for all its citizens,” Obi stated. He called for improved welfare, training, and equipment for security operatives to consolidate on recent successes.
Obi, however, cautioned against complacency, emphasizing the need for full judicial processes to ensure accountability. “Beyond arrests, we must remain vigilant. Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served,” he warned. “Those arrested must face the full weight of the law to discourage impunity.”
Reaffirming his vision for a peaceful and secure nation, the former Anambra governor stressed that national security is essential to Nigeria’s development. “A secure Nigeria is possible,” he asserted, urging the government to show the necessary political will, provide resources, and offer full support to security agencies.
Obi concluded by reiterating his commitment to building a “New Nigeria” rooted in peace, justice, and sustainable progress.
