Abia State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has urged stakeholders in Aba and across the state to join forces in protecting the public infrastructure established by his administration and in maintaining the significant progress made in keeping Aba clean. This appeal came during a visit from the Executives of two prominent business groups: the Association of International Traders (AIT) and the Ultimate Importers Association (UIA), who expressed their gratitude for the transformative efforts his administration has launched to revitalize the city.

During the meeting held on Tuesday, August 19, Governor Otti acknowledged the business leaders, including AIT President Prince Edmund Igwe and UIA President Chief Iroegbu U. Agu, for their appreciation of the strides made in rebuilding Aba after years of neglect. “It is the role of the Government to create an environment where your hard work can flourish,” he stated, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to the revitalization of the region.

Reflecting on the challenges faced over the last two years, Governor Otti remarked on the progress made but emphasized that there is still much work to be done. He expressed pride in the journey taken towards rehabilitating Aba while remaining committed to further improvements, stating, “Even if you didn’t come back to show appreciation, we can see it from the faces of people.”

Governor Otti urged the business community to take an active role in safeguarding public infrastructure from vandalism and theft. He stressed the importance of community involvement, saying, “All the roads, drainage systems, schools, and hospitals we are working on are for everyone. It is your responsibility to ensure they are protected and not vandalized.”

He recounted a recent incident in which a thief attempting to steal power cables from Omuma Road was electrocuted, underscoring the dangers of such criminal acts and the need for community vigilance. “We cannot allow such stories to become commonplace in Abia State,” he added.

On the issue of environmental cleanliness, Governor Otti called for a collaborative campaign to maintain the cleanliness of Aba, urging the public to be proactive in preventing littering. “If we turn a blind eye, the refuse will return, but not under our watch. We all must promote cleanliness and hold one another accountable,” he declared.

The Governor also announced that work is currently underway on several inner-city roads, highlighting the efforts of the Greater Aba Development Agency (GADA). He expressed gratitude to local businessmen for their acknowledgment of the administration’s initiatives and for their tax contributions, reinforcing the idea that accountability fosters appreciation for government actions.

Earlier, representatives from AIT and UIA commended the Governor for his infrastructure rebuilding efforts and the restoration of security in the region, stating, “Trucks and containers no longer fall on top of each other as they did two years ago.” They commented on the improved safety of warehouses and other commercial operations since Governor Otti took office.

In conclusion, Chief James Agbagha Ochunkwo, the Public Relations Officer of the AIT, thanked the Governor for his unprecedented infrastructural initiatives and urged him to continue the momentum as businesses make their way back to the state.

The meeting also featured several government officials, including the Hon. Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, and the Hon. Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Chibueze Nwokocha, among others.
