The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has called for calm and reconciliation between two prominent Yoruba monarchs — the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade — following a dispute over a chieftaincy title conferred on Ibadan businessman, Dotun Sanusi.

The disagreement arose after the Ooni conferred the title of Okanlomo of Oodua on Sanusi during the launch of the 2geda social media and business platform, held on Saturday, August 16, at Ilaji Hotel and Sports Resort in Ibadan. The Alaafin reacted strongly to the move, demanding within 48 hours that the Ooni revoke the title or face unspecified repercussions.

In response, the Ooni’s spokesman, Moses Olafare, stated that the palace would not be swayed by threats, and that the issue was now open to public judgment.

Reacting to the escalating tension, Gani Adams, in a statement issued on Wednesday, disclosed that he had contacted respected Yoruba elders to mediate. He stressed the importance of unity between the two monarchs, warning that internal discord could pave the way for external interference. “If there’s no crack in the wall, the lizard cannot penetrate,” he cautioned.

Describing both monarchs as symbols of Yoruba heritage and influence across Africa, Adams emphasized the urgent need for peace, especially at a time when Yorubaland faces increasing security threats. He appealed for a peaceful resolution to safeguard the region’s stability and cultural unity.
