Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has emphasized that voter registration is now a mandatory obligation for all eligible residents of the state, not just a civic responsibility. He made this declaration on Friday during the inauguration of a 36-member Committee on Voters Registration and Civic Awareness at the Government House.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, the governor charged the committee with the ambitious goal of registering at least 10 million voters during the ongoing national exercise. Ibrahim described the assignment as challenging but essential, urging the team to register an additional five million voters by the end of the campaign.

The committee has been tasked with overseeing polling units across the state, ensuring that citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and coordinating closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee the availability of voter cards. “Kano remains the most populous state with a high level of political consciousness,” Ibrahim noted.

He further encouraged previously disenfranchised citizens to take advantage of the exercise, stressing that voter registration is key to electing credible leaders committed to development. In response, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, affirmed the team’s readiness, describing their appointment as a call to serve the people of Kano.
