A leadership crisis has erupted within the Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the suspension of its state chairman, Obinna Don-Norman, over allegations of abuse of office, high-handedness, and mismanagement of party assets.

The decision was made by the State Working Committee (SWC) on Friday after a petition was filed by the Deputy Social/Welfare Secretary, C. C. John. The suspension was ratified during a harmonization and unification meeting held in Aba.

In the interim, state vice chairman Kanu Okorofor was appointed as acting chairman. Additionally, a three-member investigative panel led by Kalu Kalu has been set up to thoroughly examine the allegations against Don-Norman.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Okorofor criticized the suspended chairman’s leadership style, claiming it lacked inclusivity and accountability. He alleged that Don-Norman sidelined SWC members, held secret meetings, and operated the party as a private entity. Okorofor also accused him of mismanaging party property, including the unauthorized sale of two buses, a Sienna vehicle, and other assets.

Describing the suspension as timely, Okorofor said it was essential for repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 elections. “We need a chairman who works in the interest of the party, not one who sidelines others and runs a one-man show,” he stated.

When reached for comment, Don-Norman said he was in a meeting and would respond later. At the time of this report, no official statement had been received from him.
