President Bola Tinubu arrived in Brasília on Monday to kick off a state visit aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic relationship with Brazil. He was welcomed at the Brasília Air Base by top Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s envoy to Nigeria.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu’s visit will include an official welcoming ceremony with full military honours at the Planalto Palace. The two presidents are scheduled to hold a closed-door meeting, followed by broader bilateral discussions and the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). A joint press conference is also expected.

Tinubu, who arrived from Los Angeles, was received by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu. Other Nigerian officials, including ministers, heads of agencies, and private sector leaders, later joined him at his hotel. They are set to engage in multiple bilateral sessions during the visit.

This visit builds on Tinubu’s previous engagements in Brazil, including his attendance at the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in July 2025 and the G20 Summit in November 2024. With ties between Nigeria and Brazil dating back to the 1960s, current collaborations have focused on agriculture and defence. The visit is expected to advance projects such as the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme and the $2.5 billion JBS investment, both of which aim to enhance food security and job creation in Nigeria.
