Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has called for the creation of a structured support system to encourage reverse migration, stressing that such a framework would help Nigerian returnees regain confidence and reintegrate seamlessly into society.

The governor made the appeal while hosting the Chief of Mission of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche, at Government House, Umuahia. Otti revealed that his administration was already working with relevant ministries and agencies to design reintegration support programs, noting that uncertainty often discourages many Nigerians abroad who desire to return home.

Reiterating his administration’s zero tolerance for human trafficking and all forms of criminality, Otti assured that Abia remains committed to making the state uncomfortable for perpetrators of crime. He also underscored the vital role of diaspora remittances in stabilising the economy and directed the Abia State Diaspora Commission to formally invite IOM to this year’s December homecoming event.

In a show of commitment, the governor instructed the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, to provide IOM with temporary office space pending a permanent location. On her part, Dimanche commended Abia for pioneering the Diaspora Commission and outlined IOM’s priorities, including combating human trafficking, diaspora engagement, sustainable returnee reintegration, and improved migration data management.
