Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has suggested that he and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, could form a “perfect match” if paired on a joint presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Mohammed addressed speculations linking him to Makinde as a potential running mate, clarifying that while no decision has been made, the idea remains an option for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor emphasized the importance of inclusivity in candidate selection, stressing that the PDP should prioritize presenting a Christian from the South as presidential candidate with a Muslim from the North as running mate. According to him, this balance would reflect Nigeria’s diversity and prevent a repeat of the controversy surrounding the ruling All Progressives Congress’ Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023.

Mohammed argued that both he and Makinde have shown proven leadership capacity and governance experience at the state level, which could translate effectively at the national stage. “A Seyi Makinde–Bala Mohammed ticket can even match better. What Nigerians need is capacity and pedigree, which Seyi and I have demonstrated at the subnational level. But beyond us, there are several credible options within the PDP,” he noted.

The Bauchi governor also stressed that the PDP would avoid what he described as the APC’s “mistake” in the last election, insisting that zoning and religious balancing must remain guiding principles in choosing candidates. He maintained that the opposition party must remain inclusive and deliberate in its strategy if it is to win power in 2027.
