The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a sweeping victory in the Rivers State local government elections held on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
Announcing the results on Sunday, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Michael Ekpai Odey, confirmed that APC clinched chairmanship positions in 20 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in only three.
Among the LGAs won by APC are Ahoada East, Andoni, Etche, Khana, Okrika, and Bonny, while PDP secured victories in Obio/Akpor and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA).
The polls, however, were marked by the conspicuous absence of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his loyalists. According to reports, key aides including Chief of Staff Edison Ehie and Secretary to the State Government Tammy Danagogo did not participate in the election, while the 23 former council chairmen recently sacked by the Supreme Court also stayed away.
A loyalist of the governor told journalists that their camp had no reason to vote, alleging that the outcome of the election was predetermined. He also revealed that Fubara is currently outside the country and is expected to return early next month.
The source further claimed that the exercise was part of a political arrangement reached between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, in the presence of President Bola Tinubu.
