Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has raised concern over the increasing rate of boat mishaps across several riverine communities in the state, describing the incidents as both devastating and heartbreaking.

In a statement issued in Minna by his spokesman, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor noted that most of the tragedies were preventable, attributing the frequent mishaps largely to human errors such as overloading, refusal to use life jackets, and non-adherence to basic safety guidelines.

Bago urged travellers and operators along the state’s waterways to strictly observe safety measures to minimise the risks of accidents.

While commiserating with the Borgu Local Council over the most recent mishap, he extended condolences to the families of victims, praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased, quick recovery for the injured, and comfort for all affected by the tragedy.

The governor also commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), local divers, and community volunteers for their swift response in rescue and recovery efforts.
