The Federal Government has expressed grief over the boat mishap in Borgu, Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 32 people.
In a statement on Friday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy, coming just months after severe flooding devastated Mokwa in the same state.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the government and people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,” Idris said.
The minister noted that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), would work closely with the Niger State Government to provide support for survivors and the bereaved families. He commended the state emergency agency for its prompt rescue efforts.
Idris also urged Nigerians to prioritize safety on waterways, stressing the importance of wearing protective jackets during boat trips. “Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he warned.
To curb future tragedies, the minister revealed that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) had been directed to embark on a nationwide campaign on water transport safety.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wished survivors a quick recovery.
