Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade involved in Tuesday’s shooting near Emeka Offor Plaza, Onitsha Main Market.
The directive, announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, also mandated that medical treatment for all injured victims be fully covered by the state government.
The OCHA Brigade, established to enforce environmental and sanitation laws, has long faced accusations of harassment, extortion, and excessive force. On Tuesday, their enforcement operation reportedly turned violent when operatives allegedly opened fire in the crowded market area, triggering chaos.
One victim, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital, while others injured—including a pregnant woman—are receiving treatment and responding to care.
“The government appreciates the swift intervention of the Police, who restored calm and order in the area,” Mefor stated, adding that an investigation is underway and that measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents.
Police patrols have since been intensified in the area to maintain peace and stability.
The tragic shooting has once again highlighted rising tensions between state enforcement units and the public, especially in bustling commercial hubs like Onitsha, where complaints of brutality and unprofessional conduct remain widespread.
