The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to intensify efforts in raising awareness about suicide and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.
Speaking in Dutse on Wednesday to mark the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Ahmad Tijjani, emphasized the importance of collective action in preventing suicide.
World Suicide Prevention Day, observed globally on September 10, seeks to raise awareness of suicidal behaviours, promote preventive measures, and highlight the urgent need to address mental health issues while reducing stigma.
Tijjani noted that the agency joined the rest of the world to advocate for open discussions on mental health, stressing that suicide is preventable.
“Every year, over 720,000 people die by suicide globally, leaving families and communities devastated. But suicide is preventable. Together, we can change the narrative, break harmful myths, and reduce stigma. Let’s encourage open and compassionate dialogue,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to check on their loved ones regularly, as “sometimes a simple question can save a life.” Tijjani also encouraged listening with patience and without judgment, while advising those in distress to seek professional help from doctors, counsellors, or hotlines.
“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not just about remembrance—it is about hope. Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters,” he added.
