The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has disclosed that members of the crew on board an Air Peace aircraft that skidded off the runway in Port Harcourt tested positive for alcohol and cannabis use.

The preliminary report released yesterday concerns the serious incident involving a Boeing 737-524, registered 5N-BQQ, which operated a Lagos–Port Harcourt flight on July 13, 2025.

According to NSIB, the aircraft carrying 103 passengers and crew made an unstabilised approach to Runway 21, landing long and touching down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold before coming to a halt 209 metres into the clearway. Fortunately, all occupants disembarked without injuries.

A statement signed by Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, confirmed that toxicology tests on the crew revealed traces of alcohol, while one cabin crew member tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active substance in cannabis.

The Bureau said the results are being evaluated under its human performance and safety management review. It also issued immediate safety recommendations to Air Peace, directing the airline to reinforce crew resource management training, improve decision-making during unstabilised approaches, and strengthen pre-flight fitness-for-duty monitoring.

NSIB assured that its final report will provide a full analysis, conclusions, and further recommendations to enhance air safety in Nigeria.
