Umuahia, Abia State — As the world marks the International Day of Democracy on 15 September, former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development Dr. Uchechukwu Samson Ogah has extended warm felicitations to Abians and Nigerians, calling on all citizens to recommit themselves to democratic values and civic responsibility.

In his message released today, Dr. Ogah highlights that democracy is more than periodic elections. It is built on participation and the protection of fundamental rights. He urged Abians and Nigerians to uphold these principles in their daily lives, stressing that the strength of democracy depends on both citizens and leaders.

This year’s theme as declared by the United Nations is “From Voice to Action.” Dr. Ogah noted that the theme is especially relevant. While many people have a voice, fewer follow through with action. He called on Nigerians to move beyond rhetoric to concrete contributions whether through peaceful civic engagement, voting responsibly, or holding leaders accountable.

He also admonished public office holders to foster inclusive governance, respect the rule of law, and ensure that every citizen’s voice is heard and valued. For Abia State, Dr. Ogah urged community leaders, local government officials, and ordinary citizens to work together to address pressing challenges such as poverty, infrastructure, and security and to ensure that governance delivers real results.

Dr. Ogah concluded his message with prayers for unity, peace, and sustained progress in Abia and across Nigeria, expressing confidence that if citizens and leaders alike embrace the theme “From Voice to Action,” democracy in Nigeria will deepen and flourish.
