Ohanaeze Leader Urges FG to Free Nnamdi Kanu, Calls Igbos to Register for Voter Cards

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to allow him access to urgent medical care.

In a video message shared on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata also encouraged Igbos across the country to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He stressed that Kanu’s prolonged detention offered no tangible benefit to the government, urging authorities to pursue a political solution to the matter. “The government must ensure his safety and welfare, and allow him to seek medical treatment as quickly as possible,” he said.

Kanu’s incarceration has been a major political and security issue since his rearrest in Kenya in 2021 and subsequent detention by the Department of State Services. He was first arrested in 2015 on treason-related charges, granted bail in 2017, but fled the country before being recaptured.
