As momentum builds toward the 2027 general elections, the South-North Progressive Forum (SNPF) has begun a nationwide campaign urging all political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the southern region.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, SNPF Chairman, Festus Onyekwulisi, said the initiative is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s longstanding power imbalance and promoting national unity. He stressed that while the APC and PDP have already zoned their tickets to the South, other parties such as the Labour Party and African Democratic Congress must follow suit.
The Forum also called on the National Assembly to enact legislation institutionalising power rotation, arguing that equitable power sharing is essential for stability. Onyekwulisi noted that since 1957, the North has held the presidency for 24 years compared to the South’s 18, adding that granting the South a four-year term in 2027 would reflect fairness and strengthen the federal character principle.
SNPF further unveiled plans to mobilise at least 10 million votes in support of a Southern president, introducing a new political philosophy termed “rightful defection” to allow members back candidates of their choice across party lines. Onyekwulisi emphasised that the group is not seeking to form a political party but is committed to fostering equity, justice, and national cohesion ahead of the elections.
