FIFA has confirmed that Egyptian referee Omar Amin Mohamed Amin Mohamed will take charge of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying clash against Benin Republic in Uyo on October 14.

According to the appointment letter obtained on Wednesday, Amin Mohamed will be assisted by his compatriots Mahmoud Ahmed Kamel Ahmed Aboulergal and Ali Ahmed Tawfik Teleb, while Moustafa Elbana Mahmoud Zakaria Mohamed, also from Egypt, will serve as the fourth official. Jason Joseph Damoo from Seychelles has been named referee assessor, with Ghana’s Prosper Harrison Addo as match commissioner and Xolile Nokuthula Vilakati from Eswatini as security officer.

The match will kick off at 5 p.m. local time at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Nigeria’s meeting with Benin has grown even more decisive following FIFA’s recent ruling against South Africa, who were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2–0 victory over Lesotho in March. The disciplinary decision overturned the result, awarding a 3–0 win to Lesotho and dramatically reshaping the Group C standings.

As things stand, Benin and South Africa are level on 14 points, with Benin ahead on goal difference. Nigeria and Rwanda trail closely with 11 points each, while Lesotho now have nine and Zimbabwe, on four, are already out of contention.

For the Super Eagles, this development offers a crucial lifeline. After five draws in eight games, they face a must-win tie against Lesotho in Polokwane on October 10. A victory would take them level with the leaders, setting up a decisive showdown against Benin four days later.

With a possible six points still to play for, Nigeria could reach 17 points, enough to top the group depending on other results. Alternatively, they may still qualify as one of the best four runners-up, though their current goal difference of +2 lags behind both Benin and South Africa.

The outcome in Uyo may ultimately determine which team secures a coveted ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
