A swift response by the Oyo State Fire Services Agency on Sunday averted a major disaster following a fire outbreak at a telecommunications mast site along Maple Leaf Drive, Alalubosa GRA, Alesinloye area of Ibadan.
The agency, in a statement, said it received a distress call at about 9:50 a.m. from one Mr. Abiola, reporting a fire at an Airtel cell site. A firefighting team, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Bamidele Samsudeen, promptly mobilised to the scene.
On arrival, they found the generator and personnel cabin already engulfed in flames. The firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to vital communication equipment. No casualties were recorded.
Preliminary investigations revealed that electrical sparks from the generator triggered the incident.
Reacting to the development, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the officers for their professionalism and timely intervention.
He urged residents, businesses, and owners of critical infrastructure to ensure proper maintenance of fire safety devices to prevent future occurrences.
“We must all remain conscious of fire risks. Early reporting and accurate location details enable faster response and help save lives and property,” Akinwande advised.
