Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team, the Green Falcons, sent a strong message ahead of the upcoming World Rugby Series in Canada, thrashing Ghana’s Leopards 40–0 in the opening match of their international friendly series at the Alaro City Rugby Pitch, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

The Falcons dominated the game from start to finish, displaying tactical discipline, speed, and physical strength before an energetic Lagos crowd. Vera opened scoring for Nigeria, followed by another try from Rukky, both converted by Adeze, giving the hosts a 12–0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Falcons maintained their momentum as Lauretta, Blessing U., Faustina, and Success each added tries, with Adeze and Blessing converting to seal the emphatic 40–0 victory.

Head coach Luke Shearman praised the team’s effort, calling it a reflection of hard work and unity. “The players executed our plan with confidence and intensity. This is the energy we’ll take to Canada,” he said.

Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Rugby League Association (NRLA), Ade Adebisi, commended the team’s mental strength and composure, adding that the NRLA remains committed to developing rugby from the grassroots. “This performance shows Nigeria is mentally ready. We’re also investing in the Under-19 programme to build the sport’s future,” he stated.

NRLA General Manager, Isah, described the victory as a product of discipline and preparation, while the association’s Public Relations Head, Okeke Oluwaseyi Chika, urged Nigerians to support rugby as passionately as football.

“This is Nigeria’s first major international appearance at the World Rugby Series,” Okeke said. “With national support, the Falcons can go all the way in Canada.”

The Green Falcons will face Ghana again on Saturday, October 11, for the second leg of the friendly series at the same venue.
