A leadership crisis has erupted within the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a disputed move to suspend and replace the executive officers of the party’s Ughelli North Local Government Area chapter.
In a strongly worded statement, the Ughelli North leadership described the purported suspension as “unconstitutional, fraudulent, and dead on arrival,” insisting it remains the only legally recognised authority of the party in the area.
The statement, signed by the LGA Chairman, Hon. Obakpororo Onoabedje, and Secretary, Barr. (Mrs.) Beauty Ubogun-Nze (ACArb), and addressed to the Delta State Working Committee, refuted claims that an emergency meeting was held on October 4, 2025, where a vote of no confidence was allegedly passed on the chapter’s leadership.
According to Onoabedje, “There was no such meeting at the party secretariat on October 4. Neither the chairman nor the secretary convened any meeting that day. Any such claim is entirely false and fabricated.”
The executives described the alleged suspension as a violation of Article 2 of the APC Constitution (2022 as amended), which upholds constitutional supremacy, declaring the action “illegal and void.” They also cited relevant court judgments, Majigiri vs Yusuf (2023) and Ariori vs Elemo (1983), affirming that any decision made without fair hearing is unconstitutional.
Refuting allegations of inactivity, the chapter stated it has remained functional, holding meetings regularly and registering new members as recently as May 15, 2025. The executives further denied involvement in any anti-party activities, stressing their continued loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commitment to strengthening the APC at the grassroots.
The leadership accused “impostors” of fabricating documents to destabilise the party, revealing that even a deceased member, Chief Dickson Umukoro, was falsely listed among signatories to the purported resolution.
In response, the chapter announced the indefinite suspension of nine members for alleged “gross misconduct, insubordination, and breach of party discipline.” Those affected include Samuel Evwighono, Juliet Oduma, Daniel Osiebe, Pharm. Ogaabe Suzzy, Omokiniovo John, Onakpoma Philip, Ekama Ufuoma, Sobotie Paul, and Emeyarakpo Ufuoma.
Citing Article 215 (vi) of the party constitution, the chapter said an investigative committee will review the allegations to ensure fair hearing. A vote of confidence was also passed on the current leadership, reaffirming Onoabedje, Ubogun-Nze, and Henry Ophori as the legitimate executives of the Ughelli North APC.
“The Ughelli North APC remains united, focused, and loyal to the Tinubu administration. We will not be distracted by political merchants bent on causing confusion,” the statement added.
Copies of the rejoinder have been forwarded to the APC National Chairman, National Working Committee, and other top officials for further action.
