The Lagos State Government has re-arraigned convicted kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, before the Ikeja High Court over the alleged killing of two police officers.

Evans was brought to court on Monday alongside his co-defendant, Joseph Emeka, to face a fresh five-count charge bordering on murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Both defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before Justice A. O. Ogala.

According to the prosecution, the offences were committed during Evans’ kidnapping operations in Lagos before his arrest in 2017. The victims were said to be two police officers who lost their lives while attempting to apprehend the notorious syndicate.

Evans, who is already serving a life sentence for kidnapping, was arrested on June 10, 2017, in Magodo, Lagos, after a coordinated police operation that followed months of surveillance.

In February 2022, he was convicted of conspiracy and kidnapping, with the court describing him as “a criminal mastermind” responsible for several high-profile abductions and immense suffering inflicted on his victims.

The new charges represent a continuation of the state’s efforts to ensure full justice over Evans’ alleged crimes and the victims affected by his operations.

Justice Ogala adjourned the matter to a later date for further hearing.
