The Abia State Government has reached a major milestone with the successful conclusion of negotiations to acquire a 60% stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) assets within the state, following the acceptance of its offer by Interstate Electrics.
This landmark agreement marks the beginning of a transformative phase that will empower the state to oversee electricity generation, regulation, and distribution across the eight ring-fenced local government areas in Abia Central and North senatorial zones.
Governor Alex Otti described the achievement as a strategic step toward realizing his administration’s vision of a stronger and more reliable power sector — a critical enabler of economic growth and sustainable development in the state.
In line with ongoing efforts to improve electricity access, the State Executive Council has also approved the restoration of power supply to Ohafia, ending several years of blackout. This move is expected to boost the operations of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority and stimulate local productivity.
Additionally, the government has awarded contracts for the construction of five major roads across Abia. On Friday, October 24, two of these — the 25km Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road and the 13.1km Ariam–Usaka Ring Road in Ikwuano LGA — will be officially flagged off. Other projects include the 9.35km Ihechiowa–Arochukwu Ring Road, the 4.9km Isieketa–Mba Itungwa–Mgbedeala Road in Isiala Ngwa South, and the 3.72km Ogidi–Umuala Eziama Ntigha Road in Isiala Ngwa North.
These projects form part of the ongoing infrastructural transformation designed to connect rural communities and unlock new economic opportunities across the state.
Meanwhile, Abia State will join the global community on October 15 to mark this year’s World Food Day at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia. With the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” the event will emphasize collective action toward ending hunger, improving nutrition, and building a resilient agricultural system.
The Otti administration reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to delivering reliable electricity, durable infrastructure, and sustainable growth for the benefit of all Abians.
