Afrobeats icon David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, brought both star power and inspiration to Clifford University, Owerrinta, Abia State, on Sunday during the institution’s 6th Convocation Ceremony. The global music sensation officially commissioned a female hostel named after his late mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke, and delivered a heartfelt commencement speech that moved attendees.
The event, graced by top dignitaries, students, and entertainment figures, reached an emotional peak when Davido cut the ribbon to unveil the Veronica Adeleke Female Hostel — a tribute he described as a reflection of his mother’s lifelong dedication to education and humanitarian service.
In his speech, Davido encouraged the graduating students to pursue purposeful lives and use their talents for the greater good. “When I looked into their faces, I saw the same fire that built me — the hunger to rise, to turn pain into power,” he said. “Talent may open doors, but purpose gives those doors meaning.”
The award-winning artist, known for his numerous educational initiatives, added that the hostel’s dedication symbolizes his mother’s enduring legacy. “My mother believed deeply in the power of education and compassion to transform lives. This building continues her mission — turning love into legacy,” he noted.
Adding to the excitement, nightlife mogul Cubana Chief Priest, who accompanied Davido, pledged to sponsor the tuition of 50 Clifford University students, drawing thunderous applause from the audience. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chimezie Omeonu, praised Davido for his contribution to youth development, calling him a “beacon of hope and a role model for African youth.”
The event concluded with the joyful unveiling of the Veronica Imade Adeleke Female Hostel, marking not only a memorable day for Clifford University but also a powerful reminder of Davido’s message — that true greatness is measured not by fame or wealth, but by the impact one leaves on others.
