Abia Traditional Rulers Urge Peace Between Governor Otti and Deputy Speaker Kalu

The Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers has called for an immediate end to the ongoing war of words between Governor Alex Otti and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

Addressing journalists in Umuahia on Wednesday, the royal fathers, led by their chairman, His Royal Majesty Eze Linus Nto Mbah, expressed concern that the public exchange between the two leaders could escalate into a crisis capable of destabilising the state.

The council appealed to both parties to exercise restraint and focus on fostering peace and unity in Abia. They particularly urged Kalu to desist from making unsubstantiated statements that could strain relations between the governor, the presidency, and the people of the state.

Praising Governor Otti’s performance, the monarchs commended his efforts in road rehabilitation, healthcare, education, and workers’ welfare, noting that no previous administration had demonstrated greater commitment to the state’s development.

They highlighted Otti’s achievements, including renovation of schools and health centres, recruitment of teachers, improvement in security, and prompt payment of salaries and pensions.

Describing Kalu’s comments as “unstatesmanly,” the traditional rulers warned politicians against inciting the public or creating tension ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Abia is a peaceful state, and we will not tolerate any form of verbal or political violence that could disrupt our harmony,” the statement read.

The council also passed a vote of confidence on Governor Otti, urging him to sustain his developmental strides across the state.
