The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has clarified that he will only testify in the ongoing trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, if he is officially summoned by the court.

Speaking during his monthly media chat on Friday, Wike addressed reports that Kanu had listed him among 23 witnesses expected to testify in his defense.

He stated that he had not been contacted or served any legal documents regarding the matter.

“You don’t become a witness by reading it in the newspapers. No one has served me any court papers. If I am subpoenaed by the court, I will appear and perform my civic duty,” Wike said.

The minister stressed that he neither volunteered to testify nor had prior knowledge of being listed as a witness. However, he maintained that he would comply with the law if required to do so.

Nnamdi Kanu is expected to open his defense soon at the Federal High Court in Abuja and has reportedly named several prominent figures, including Wike, former Defence Minister Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd), and former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd), as intended witnesses.

The trial has continued to attract widespread public interest and political attention across the country.
