The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has debunked reports claiming it instructed schools to restrict students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, on behalf of the Head of National Office, the Council described the circulating reports as “unfounded assumptions” and urged schools and the public to disregard them.

Responding to viral social media claims that schools were directed to limit subject combinations, WAEC clarified that it has no authority to determine or modify senior secondary curricula, stressing that such responsibility rests solely with the Federal Government and relevant education agencies.

“The Council did not issue any directive restricting students’ subject choices for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement read. “WAEC’s role is to implement government-approved curricula through examinations, operating strictly within the frameworks set by Nigerian authorities.”

The Council assured stakeholders that any curriculum changes would follow due process and reiterated its commitment to fairness, professionalism, and transparency. It further advised schools and the public to rely only on official WAEC communications for verified information about the 2026 examination.

WAEC, established in 1952 and operating across five West African nations, reaffirmed that no student would be disadvantaged in the forthcoming examinations.
