Dangote Cement Plant, Obajana, has launched its 2025 Sustainability Week with a vibrant lineup of activities promoting sportsmanship, education, and community engagement under the theme “Sustainable Progress: Celebrating Growth and Partnerships.”

Starting on October 24, this year’s edition has been expanded to include a wider range of programs aimed at fostering holistic community development, according to a statement released by the company on Wednesday.

The opening ceremony set the tone for a week of collaboration, with participants drawn from both Dangote Cement’s workforce and surrounding host communities. A central highlight was a football tournament that embodied teamwork and friendly competition.

The grand finale, held on October 29, 2025, at the Obajana Academy Field, saw the Oyo Community Football Team claim victory with a thrilling 1–0 win over Dangote Cement Transport. The tournament featured teams from the Dangote Cement Obajana Plant, Dangote Cement Transport, and host communities, and was designed to promote physical wellness, recreation, and stronger community relationships.

The final match attracted an enthusiastic audience and was attended by senior management, including Plant Director Mr. Azad Nawabuddin; CGM Maintenance Mr. Panjala Sreedar; CGM Production Mr. John Gwong; and GM Special Duties Mr. Ademola Adeyemi. The ceremony concluded with commendations from participants and guests, who praised the initiative for reinforcing Dangote Cement’s values of collaboration, inclusion, and sustainable community development.

Alongside the sports events, an Inter-School Spelling Bee and Quiz Competition featured ten secondary schools from host communities, providing young learners with a platform to showcase academic talent. Golden Vessels Academy, Obajana, emerged as the Spelling Bee champion, highlighting the company’s commitment to nurturing education and intellectual growth.

During the launch, Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin emphasized the rationale behind the expanded Sustainability Week activities. “Our investment in sports infrastructure and programming demonstrates our commitment to the holistic well-being of our community members. The football tournament goes beyond entertainment—it builds character, teaches valuable life lessons, and strengthens partnerships between our organization and the communities we serve,” he said.

Head of HAM-Admin/HR, Mr. Peter Agba, highlighted the company’s integrated approach to community development: “By combining sporting events with educational initiatives like the Spelling Bee, we aim to nurture both the physical and intellectual potential of our community members, laying the foundation for sustainable growth and empowerment.”

The successful launch sets the stage for the rest of the week, which will feature environmental initiatives, health awareness campaigns, and skills development workshops. Dangote Cement reaffirmed its commitment to year-round community engagement through quarterly sporting events and educational programs.

By integrating sports, education, and community development into its sustainability framework, Dangote Cement continues to demonstrate how corporate initiatives can foster unity, nurture talent, and create lasting social impact in the communities where it operates.
