Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that although he was raised a Christian, he later converted to Islam as part of his ongoing spiritual journey.
Speaking during a recent live chat with American streamer PlaqueBoyMax, Burna Boy said his search for truth has led him through different religions and deep personal reflection.
> “I grew up as a Christian, and then I converted to Islam. I’ve studied it all, and I’m still trying to understand what’s really going on. The more I learn, the more confused I get,” he admitted.
The “City Boy” crooner explained that his spiritual path has made him question traditional religious systems, preferring instead to seek a personal connection with a higher power.
> “I’m trying to be above belief, I want to know. You only need to believe when you don’t know,” he said.
While expressing respect for faith, Burna Boy described religion as a tool of control, emphasizing that his focus is now on spirituality rather than organized doctrine.
> “Religion is bullshit. It’s all a control mechanism. But I believe in a higher power, clearly, we’re creations, and there must be a creator,” he stated.
The singer added that prayer remains a vital part of his life.
> “When I close my eyes to pray, I feel heard. I don’t know by whom, but as I receive answers, I know I’m blessed,” he said.
During the conversation, Burna Boy also paid homage to the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing him as the only artist greater than himself.
> “Fela is the king. He’s the only one greater than me,” he declared while singing Fela’s protest song ‘Coffin for Head of State.’
Beyond music, Burna Boy continues to expand his creative influence through film. He recently served as executive producer for ‘3 Cold Dishes’, a pan-African revenge thriller directed by Asurf Oluseyi. The film, shot across Nigeria, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire, premiered in London before debuting at AFRIFF 2025 in Lagos.
Through his production company Spaceship Films, Burna Boy is championing African storytelling on the global stage. ‘3 Cold Dishes’ is slated for release across 26 African countries, as well as France, the U.S., and Canada.
Burna Boy, who won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2021 for ‘Twice As Tall’, recently released his eighth studio album titled ‘No Sign of Weakness.’
