Senator Izunaso Frees 17 Imo Inmates, Says Daughter Inspired Act of Kindness

The Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Osita Izunaso, has revealed that his daughter inspired his decision to facilitate the release of 17 inmates from the Owerri Correctional Centre.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri, Izunaso explained that his daughter, Cassy Izunaso — a legal practitioner — had urged him to include charitable activities such as prison outreach and support for the needy as part of his 59th birthday celebration on October 30, 2025.

He said fulfilling that request and a personal covenant with God to show compassion to those in distress motivated him to reach out to legal professionals and secure freedom for 17 convicted prisoners.

“This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the less privileged and promoting mercy and rehabilitation,” he stated.

Izunaso, a long-time advocate for the underprivileged and founder of the Kpakpando Foundation, has for over a decade sponsored educational scholarships, vocational training, and welfare programmes for persons living with disabilities.

During his visit to the Owerri Correctional Centre, the senator met with the Controller, Mr. Mike Okorie, and was accompanied by his traditional ruler, HRH Eze Victor Ogwurumba, and other dignitaries.

He urged the released inmates to embrace discipline, live responsibly, and contribute positively to society, noting that their prison experience could serve as a turning point. “Sometimes God allows such moments to help them avoid worse situations,” he added.

Okorie commended the senator for his humanitarian gesture, noting that Izunaso paid the fines of the inmates — including two women — which ranged from ₦1 million and below, leading to their release.

In a Facebook post, Izunaso further disclosed that his team provided medical care to over 200 inmates, distributed medications, and handed supplies to the correctional centre’s medical unit.

“We wish the freed inmates a better and more purposeful life in society,” he wrote.
