The organisers of the Opobo Marathon have sealed a strategic sponsorship deal with Ailes Group for the eighth edition of the race, scheduled to hold on January 5, 2026, in the historic coastal town of Opobo, Rivers State.
Ailes Group, a fast-growing conglomerate with interests in technology, energy, and integrated solutions, joins other major partners backing the event as it continues to gain recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading community-based coastal marathons.
Founder and Project Lead of the Opobo Marathon, Henry Cookey, described the partnership as a significant milestone in the marathon’s journey of growth and impact. “We are excited to welcome Ailes Group as a valued partner for the 8th Opobo Marathon,” Cookey said. “This collaboration reflects our shared vision for innovation, wellness, and community development. Together, we’re not just running — we’re moving forward.”
Now in its eighth year, the marathon has become a notable fixture on Nigeria’s sporting calendar, promoting tourism, youth engagement, and healthy living. The 2026 edition, themed “Gbamaso – Be Limitless,” promises a larger athlete turnout, broader community involvement, and stronger institutional partnerships.
In a statement, Ailes Group Chairman and Managing Director, Chief Michael Onuoha, said the company’s support for the event aligns with its commitment to social development and unity through sports. “The Opobo Marathon represents resilience, collaboration, and progress — values that resonate deeply with Ailes Group,” he stated. “We are proud to be part of this inspiring platform that empowers communities and promotes excellence.”
Since its debut in 2019, the Opobo Marathon has grown into a major attraction for runners and visitors across Nigeria, celebrating the rich heritage and hospitality of the Opobo Kingdom. With Ailes Group joining as a sponsor, organisers say the 2026 edition will set new benchmarks in organisation, participation, and experience for both athletes and spectators.
