Former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has affirmed his commitment to remain active in politics for the rest of his life. He made the declaration during an interactive session with journalists on Wednesday, held as part of the celebrations for his 70th birthday.

“I will stay in the political arena for life to continue promoting credible leadership in the country. Leaving politics is not even a consideration,” Shekarau stated.

The former governor also pledged to keep contributing to the development of Kano State and Nigeria. Reflecting on his life, he said he harbored no regrets, noting that regret only arises when one fails to appreciate God’s blessings. “By Allah’s grace, I am 70 today—a significant milestone. Life’s blessings must be acknowledged, and I am grateful for all that I have,” he said.

Shekarau, who also served as Minister of Education, expressed gratitude to those who have supported him and sought forgiveness from anyone he may have wronged. “As humans, we all err. I ask those I may have offended to forgive me, and I have forgiven those who have offended me. I am starting a new chapter with a clean slate,” he added.

Commenting on the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Shekarau acknowledged some efforts but stressed that more needed to be done, particularly in the areas of security and the economy. “The ongoing killings and displacements are unacceptable. Economic policies must ensure people can access food, because without basic sustenance, other matters—education, politics—become secondary. A nation can only prosper if its citizens can live safely and securely,” he said.

He concluded by urging the Federal Government to prioritise the protection of lives and property and to make living conditions more affordable for all Nigerians.
