The United States government has revoked the visas of about 80,000 foreign nationals, including several Nigerians, after a comprehensive review linked some visa holders to criminal and security-related offences. The U.S. Department of State announced the decision in a statement on Thursday, describing it as part of the Trump administration’s commitment to safeguarding American citizens.

According to the statement, the revocation exercise was in line with the administration’s “promises made, promises kept” policy, emphasizing that former President Donald Trump remained focused on prioritizing the safety and interests of Americans above all else.

Details from the Department of State revealed that 16,000 visas were withdrawn for driving under the influence (DUI), 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 for theft. Other cancellations were linked to more serious offences such as terrorism, aiding terrorist activities, threats to public safety, and violations of visa stay limits.

Reaffirming its strict immigration stance, the State Department said the move was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border protection and uphold the integrity of the U.S. immigration system. It added that further actions would continue against foreign nationals who pose security threats, underscoring the administration’s tough approach to national security and public safety.
