The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of three individuals suspected of engaging in vote buying during the Anambra State governorship election held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
In a statement released by the commission, the suspects were identified as Emeka Ilokasia, Nwachukwu Loretta, and Emuka Chuwudi. They were apprehended at different polling units across the state by EFCC operatives who were deployed to monitor the election and ensure compliance with electoral laws.
According to the statement, Emeka Ilokasia was arrested at Ward 2, Njikoka Local Government Area; Nwachukwu Loretta was nabbed at Ward 2 (008), Awkuzu, in Oyi Local Government Area; while Emuka Chuwudi was apprehended at Umunachi village in Dunukofia Local Government Area.
The EFCC noted that the suspects were caught in possession of materials and items suspected to be used for inducing voters. They were reportedly offering cash and other incentives to influence voting patterns in favour of certain political interests.
An EFCC official who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that the arrests were part of the commission’s broader efforts to ensure free, fair, and credible elections devoid of financial manipulation. “The EFCC has a constitutional duty to protect the integrity of the electoral process, and vote buying undermines democracy. Our operatives will continue to monitor elections closely and act decisively against offenders,” the source said.
The commission added that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation at the EFCC’s field office. Once investigations are completed, they will be formally charged to court in line with the provisions of the law.
The EFCC also urged voters and political parties to uphold the principles of fair play and resist the temptation to engage in electoral malpractices. It reiterated its commitment to working with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and other stakeholders to safeguard the nation’s democratic process.
