Observers Urge SIECs to Transfer Election Observer Accreditation to Security Agencies

A delegation of independent election observers has recommended that State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) across Nigeria hand over the responsibility of accrediting election observers to security agencies. They argued that this move would strengthen transparency and enhance the credibility of the nation’s electoral processes.

The recommendation was made on Monday in Jalingo, during the delegation’s presentation of a preliminary report on the chairmanship and councillorship elections held in Taraba State on 8 November 2025.

Led by National President Dr. Lazarus Nwanchukwu, the group stated that involving security agencies in accrediting observers would ensure that only verified and qualified individuals are allowed to monitor elections, helping to prevent impersonation and other irregularities that undermine electoral integrity.

Dr. Nwanchukwu emphasized the importance of closer collaboration between SIECs and security agencies to guarantee free, fair, and peaceful elections nationwide.

The delegation also commended Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas for his “open-minded and unwavering support” for the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TATSIEC) and praised the commission for conducting the local government elections “without fear or favour.”

They lauded the governor’s efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities, describing his security initiatives as crucial to maintaining peace and promoting development in the state.

The observers also applauded voters for their high turnout, noting that active participation reflects a strong commitment to safeguarding local government autonomy and strengthening grassroots democracy.

Security agencies were commended for maintaining law and order before, during, and after the elections, ensuring a smooth and peaceful electoral process across Taraba State.

The delegation noted that a comprehensive report on their findings from the Taraba local government elections will be released in the coming weeks. They clarified that their mission was not to interfere with the conduct of the 8 November elections or to criticize TATSIEC’s procedures but to provide constructive recommendations for improving future elections in Nigeria.
