Telecommunications giant Globacom has entered into an internet connectivity partnership with the Imo State Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Governance, advancing the state’s push toward a fully digital economy and the development of a Smart City in Owerri.

The agreement, described as the largest single fixed internet connectivity project ever executed by the Globacom Enterprise Business Group, reinforces the company’s role in delivering advanced digital infrastructure and next-generation technology solutions across Nigeria.

Under the partnership, Globacom will provide high-capacity internet services to key state institutions and major digital initiatives. Beneficiaries include the Owerri Smart City project—which consists of 15 mega buildings—the Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Governance, and the Imo State University for Innovation, Science and Technology (formerly Imo State Polytechnic).

Globacom noted that its Glo-1 submarine cable system will serve as the backbone of the project. The privately owned fibre optic network links Nigeria directly to Europe, offering secure, high-bandwidth connectivity essential for driving Imo State’s digital transformation and improving public service delivery.

The company said the collaboration reflects its commitment to boosting socio-economic development, expanding digital access, and strengthening nationwide connectivity.

“We appreciate the confidence shown in Globacom by Governor Hope Uzodinma and his team,” the company stated. “This partnership highlights our technical strength, extensive coverage, and reliability in delivering enterprise-grade connectivity. We look forward to working closely with the state’s technical team to ensure prompt execution and support Imo’s digital economy vision.”

Globacom also praised the Imo State Government for its dedication to technological growth, youth empowerment, and innovation-led governance. It added that the state’s investments in digital infrastructure and technology-driven programmes will stimulate job creation, foster innovation, and promote sustainable economic progress.

“Imo State is setting a commendable standard by leveraging technology to enhance governance, education, and business operations. We commend the governor’s focus on empowering young people and building an innovation-driven economy. This partnership aligns with our mission to power Nigeria’s digital future,” the statement added.
