Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor and founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, has expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria, linking the trend primarily to the consumption of junk and highly processed foods.

Speaking on Friday to mark the 2025 World Diabetes Day, Dr. Soludo called on Nigerians to reconsider their dietary habits as a key measure in combating the disease. She emphasized that adopting healthier lifestyles is essential for reducing the national burden of diabetes. The 2025 World Diabetes Day theme is “Diabetes Across Life Stages.”

“Diabetes has entered many homes because of a preference for junk and unhealthy foods over natural, wholesome options,” Soludo said. She stressed that while routine medical check-ups are critical for early detection and management, lifestyle changes remain the most important defense against the disease.

“Lifestyle choices can either harm or protect us. Much of what we consume today is detrimental to our health. Paying attention to what we eat and drink is crucial, and this is where healthy living makes the biggest difference,” she added.

Citing official statistics, Soludo noted that over three million Nigerians currently live with diabetes, with the actual figure likely higher due to undiagnosed cases. She urged collective action, calling on families, governments, and health stakeholders to raise awareness and promote healthier habits.

Through her Healthy Living Initiative, Dr. Soludo reaffirmed her dedication to promoting good nutrition, regular exercise, and disciplined lifestyles as effective strategies to mitigate the impact of diabetes across all age groups.
