The Lagos State chapter of the Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators of Nigeria (ASOHON) has expressed concern over the increasing number of unregistered and illegal orphanages operating across the country.

In a statement shared with Saturday PUNCH to mark 2025 World Orphans Day, State Coordinator Ganiyu Dosunmu described the proliferation of fake and unapproved homes in many states as a pressing issue that requires urgent collective action. He called for stricter regulations to curb the activities of operators running unmonitored facilities.

“We commend the Lagos State Government for its commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and urge continued support in refining stakeholder policies and implementing a joint task force to protect registered orphanages and homes in Lagos State,” Dosunmu said. He also highlighted the need to address issues such as overstayed children in homes and ensuring regular, unhindered communication.

Reaffirming the association’s dedication to child welfare, Dosunmu added, “We are proud to partner with NATIP to combat child trafficking and protect children from exploitation. We will continue working closely with NATIP to prevent any practices that could undermine our association while maintaining the highest standards of child protection.”

Speaking to stakeholders, Dosunmu acknowledged the resilience and potential of children living in vulnerable situations across Nigeria and Lagos State. He also conveyed greetings from the National President of ASOHON, Rev. Dr. Gabriel Oyedeji; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Rev. Mrs. Christiana Bamidele George; and the Lagos State Executive Council, while specially recognizing Rev. Mrs. Ebun Idowu, Chairperson of the 2025 Orphans Day, for her tireless efforts in organizing the event.
