The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a stern warning of a potential nationwide shutdown, raising concerns over the stability of electricity supply across Nigeria. The union’s threat comes amid growing tensions between electricity workers and security personnel in parts of the country.
According to NUEE, the warning was prompted by an alleged attack on staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Imo State. The union claimed that armed police officers assaulted TCN employees while they were performing their official duties, an act described as “unprovoked and unacceptable.”
The union has called for immediate intervention from relevant authorities to ensure the safety of electricity workers and prevent further escalation. NUEE also warned that failure to address the incident could lead to a nationwide industrial action, potentially disrupting power supply for millions of Nigerians.
Electricity consumers and businesses have been urged to prepare for possible service interruptions should the union follow through with its threat. Stakeholders in the power sector are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the need for dialogue and swift resolution to avert a national energy crisis.
