The Delta State Government has commissioned a newly built cluster of housing units and essential infrastructure in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area, as part of its ongoing efforts to rebuild the community devastated by the March 2024 crisis that claimed the lives of 17 Nigerian Army personnel.

The new facilities include a Community Resettlement Centre, primary and secondary schools, and a primary health centre. The housing project comprises 40 room spaces, two blocks equipped with 20 toilets and bathrooms, a solar-powered water system, and a paved, roofed walkway linking all buildings.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, inaugurated the facilities on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, the governor described the occasion as “a moment of renewal” for Okuama and Delta State as a whole.
“This is more than just commissioning buildings; it is a commitment to peace, dignity, and shared prosperity,” he said.

Oborevwori acknowledged the community’s painful memories and ongoing recovery but affirmed the government’s resolve to pursue rebuilding, reconciliation, and a new beginning.
“This resettlement centre is not merely a group of houses—it is a place for new beginnings, where families can regain their footing and where Okuama can rise again,” he added.

He noted that the project aligns with his administration’s MORE Agenda and urged residents to safeguard the facilities, maintain peace, and promote unity. The governor also thanked contractors, the Ministry of Housing, Ughelli South Local Government Council, security agencies, and community leaders for their roles in the reconstruction effort.

Chairman of Ughelli South LGA, Lucky Avweromre, commended the governor and highlighted the council’s contribution to the establishment of the Community Resettlement Centre.

Community representatives, Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Mr. Akemor Victor, expressed appreciation on behalf of Okuama residents.
They recalled the trauma of the March 14, 2024 incident, noting that the governor’s intervention prevented further deterioration of the situation.
“We assure you of our commitment to sustaining peace and harmony because we know you are a leader who values peace,” they said.
