Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has called for calm following the conviction and sentencing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by a Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025. The judgement, which found Kanu guilty of terrorism-related offences and sentenced him to life imprisonment, has triggered widespread shock and sadness across Abia and beyond.

Otti recalled that he had strongly condemned the 2017 military invasion of Kanu’s family home in Afaraukwu, describing it then as an unnecessary use of force. He noted that as far back as September 2017, he consistently advocated dialogue over military action, stressing that emotionally intelligent and restrained leadership—not violence—was vital for resolving the IPOB issue.

The governor stated that poor handling of the situation in its early days contributed to the complexities now facing the nation. He revealed that since December 22, 2023, he has been in high-level discussions with the federal authorities, pushing for an alternative, diplomatic approach to resolving Kanu’s case. According to him, some agreements were reached but depended on the swift conclusion of the court process. Now that judgement has been delivered, he believes the agreed diplomatic steps can proceed.

Otti assured Ndi Abia that he is actively pursuing this strategy and is open to partnering with other well-meaning Nigerians committed to securing Kanu’s release through peaceful engagement with the federal government. He urged citizens to remain calm, avoid inflammatory actions or comments, and support efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. He also cautioned politicians against exploiting the situation for personal gain.

He reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing peace in the South East through wisdom, dialogue, and diplomacy, adding that he is confident a positive outcome is within reach.
