Demuren urges overhaul of BASA to defend Nigerian airlines

Former aviation regulator Harold Demuren has urged a review of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), saying current arrangements favor foreign airlines and put Nigerian carriers at a disadvantage.

He argued that existing agreements allow foreign airlines to dominate profitable routes, limiting opportunities for local carriers to expand and compete on an international level.

Demuren believes revisiting BASA terms would create a fairer environment, enabling Nigerian airlines to access more global routes and operate competitively.

He emphasized that such a review is crucial for the survival and growth of indigenous airlines amid increasing foreign dominance in the country’s aviation sector.
