The spirit of Christmas filled the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia on Saturday during the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, an event that blended music, worship, and reflection with a strong call to civic duty. Beyond the celebration, the gathering served as a forum for highlighting the connection between faith, leadership, and community service, presenting the season as a moment for thoughtful action and renewed commitment to societal progress in Abia State.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, described this year’s Christmas message as more than a spiritual reminder — it was a strategic appeal for social responsibility. Organized by the SSG’s office, the ceremony encouraged citizens to view the season as an opportunity to rebuild values, deepen faith, and recommit themselves to collective development rather than simply personal celebration.
Professor Kalu stressed that Christmas should inspire practical action, urging individuals to support the vulnerable, address social challenges, and nurture responsibility within families, communities, and government. He portrayed the season as a catalyst for civic transformation, rooted in service, compassion, and a shared sense of renewal.
Reflecting on developments in Abia State under Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, the SSG noted a visible shift from decades of leadership setbacks to a new era of purposeful governance. He pointed to strengthened institutions, accelerated infrastructure development, and restored public confidence as clear signs that progress is achievable when leaders and citizens work together toward a common vision of sustainable growth.
